Why is Website Written Content Important?

By Jackie Griffiths, senior copywriter at Freelance Copy UK

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. On the internet this is even more important than anywhere else, as the average web surfer attention span is famously short, his mind renowned for being suspicious, and his concentration notably frail. As soon as a person arrives at your website you must GRAB his attention and make sure it stays grabbed. One obvious way to do this is via the graphics and visual design of your site, and the second is by the words people will read on the screen.

You must make sure that your written content is as good as the visual style, if not better. People use the words on your website to help them judge whether it's a trustworthy site or not. If you have bad spelling, feeble content, poor grammar, and typing mistakes it give the user and instant impression that this website is not very professional and therefore not to be trusted. You must make every word count, with each sentence designed to entice the reader to seek more information, to stay at your site and read more about what you have to say. And ultimately, of course, buy your product, enquire about your services, or sign up for your newsletter etc. As long as you get this basic and critical aspect of your website professionally completed, you stand a good chance of making your website a success.
